History

The LINQ began as the Flamingo Capri under the operation of George Goldberg and Bill Capri. The Flamingo Capri was a 180-room, $2 million motel built near the already established Flamingo Hotel and Casino, which graciously offered services to guests of the Flamingo Capri when it opened in 1959.

Just over a decade later, in 1971, Ralph Engelstad purchased the Flamingo Capri and, during his tenure, changed the resort’s name to the Imperial Palace to suit the Asian palace theme he had chosen. Engelstad’s choice was that no other resort on the Strip had a blue-tiled roof reminiscent of a Japanese shrine, carved dragons, and colossal wind chime chandeliers.

The resort was also a great place to work for the disabled, evident by the numerous awards for hiring disabled people. On the other hand, Engelstad’s record was not spotless; he had paid the second-largest fine in gaming history in Nevada for destroying documents relating to a woman’s rape and hosting Nazi parties celebrating Hitler’s birthday. Additionally, the Imperial Palace faced lawsuits for discriminating against pregnant employees and detaining a gambler unlawfully.

Engelstad died of lung cancer in 2002, 3 years after which Caesars Entertainment purchased the Imperial Palace. They soon began work on Project LINQ, which would become the LINQ Promenade. Caesars chose the name to create a sense of unity because the location also connected the Flamingo Hotel with the Imperial Palace.

For just two years, beginning in 2012, the resort operated as the Quad before becoming the LINQ in 2014. The purpose of the name change was to match the LINQ Promenade so that guests wouldn’t feel their experience was confusing or disjointed.
