If you’re looking for a strong drink, there are almost unlimited locations to choose from. Las Vegas is certainly no exception to that rule. But what if you’re tired of the bar, the nightclub, the gaming floor, etc? You could always try a speakeasy in Las Vegas if you want to spice up your beverage routine.

Originally named for the British “speak easy shop,” used to describe a smuggler’s house, the phrase eventually was adopted by establishments serving alcohol illegally. Later evolving into the shorter “speakeasy,” the term was borrowed by prohibition-era bars. Alcohol is obviously very much legal today, but the spirit of the speakeasy lives on. Ghost Donkey – Cosmopolitan – Level 2, Boulevard Tower – 3708 Las Vegas Blvd S

First up is Ghost Donkey, a speakeasy in Las Vegas that will transport you to old Mexico via the fiesta-like flavors and atmosphere. One of our favorite speakeasies on the Strip, Ghost Donkey, could be described as a little on the small side, but there is so much room for activities! That being said, there is not a lot of seating, but not to worry, you can usually stake out a spot at the bar while waiting for a seat to open.

Obviously, tequila and mezcal lovers will be thrilled, but there are plenty of beverage options and some small plate offerings (we loved the nachos). If you’re looking for old-world ambiance and unique décor, look no further than Ghost Donkey. To find Ghost Donkey, head towards the back of the Cosmopolitan food court and look for a painting of a white donkey.

Velveteen Rabbit – 1218 S Main St, Las Vegas, NV 89104

Just off the strip in the Arts District, the Velveteen Rabbit is another speakeasy in Las Vegas that can best be described as unique. A vintage atmosphere, plenty of seating, and a staff ready to mix up some truly distinct libations are all in store.

The menu of specialty cocktails is impressive, but more impressive to us is that you can tell servers what type of liquors or flavors you like, and they will craft a bespoke beverage just for you. If the weather is right, we love sitting on the patio. If low-key vibes are your thing, then get to the Velveteen Rabbit.

Here Kitty Kitty Vice Den – Resorts World – 3000 S Las Vegas Blvd

Don’t be alarmed if you notice an unusual number of people heading into Ms. Mewo’s Mamak Stall at the Famous Foods Street Eats food hall in Resorts World. They are probably headed to our next speakeasy, Here Kitty Kitty Vice Den. With a nod to Asian culture and atmosphere, Here Kitty Kitty Vice Den is a quiet getaway of sorts, free from the hustle and bustle of Resorts World and Las Vegas in general.

The list of libations is split into two groups: “The Cat’s Meow” – sweet, vivid drinks, most with a splash of fruit flavor and “Liquid Courage” – usual bar favorites, many with a Kitty twist. Of course, if you’re looking for something off the menu, most bartenders will be happy to help.

Speaking of help, if you can’t find Here Kitty Kitty Vice Den, you can ask the convenience store clerk outside. If you want a hint, look for the three beckoning cats (Maneki-neko) you might remember from your favorite Japanese restaurant.

The Laundry Room – 525 E Fremont St

Before you start thinking about washing, drying, and folding clothes after you return from Las Vegas, let me assure you that no actual laundry is going on at The Laundry Room. Located inside the Commonwealth, The Laundry Room is one of the more luxurious speakeasies on our list. So much so, that reservations are effectively mandatory.

Another small space with loads of vibe, The Laundry Room also has a few rules: leave the loud outside, no phone calls, and, most importantly, behave like an adult. There are varying reports of a dress code, though reviewers tend to respond with mixed results. Avoid athletic wear, and you should be fine.

Once inside, you’ll be blown away by the peace and quiet despite being close to Fremont Street. Featuring an authentic 1920s-era feel, The Laundry Room has an extensive menu. Still, as mentioned in previous entries, the mixologists are also quite capable of mixing a drink based strictly on your tastes, likes, or even just a flavor profile (think sweet, sour, etc). Also, keep in mind that there is a two-drink minimum, as well as a gourmet popcorn (free refills) and service/gratuity fee added to each tab.

The Underground – The Mob Museum – 300 Stewart Avenue

Another gem just off the strip is the Mob Museum. The “National Museum of Organized Crime & Law Enforcement,” features a wealth of artifacts and exhibits from the days of the mobster. But what to do when you’ve had your fill of cops and robbers? Easy – head down the basement stairs and enter The Underground.

The Underground is set up like a 1920s prohibition paradise, replete with a distillery, a private VIP area, and the speakeasy itself. The bar features even more videos and artifacts from the prohibition era, though this time, we’re all on the wrong side of the law (depending on who you are!). As for the bar itself, a well-stocked menu and weekly live musical acts will keep you doing the Foxtrot and the Lindy Hop all night long.

The Lock Speakeasy – Cabinet of Curiosities – Horseshoe Las Vegas

Revisiting the glamor of the 1920s, the Lock Speakeasy, located within the Cabinet of Curiosities inside of the Horseshoe Casino, is part escape room, part bar, and all entertainment. From the subtle lighting to the cozy atmosphere to the expert mixologists, everything about the Lock will make for an unforgettable night. Here again, you’ll be asked for your mood, likes, and dislikes (this time in the form of a questionnaire), with the answers forming the basis for your drink.

You can get any of the usual bar favorites or go completely off the menu. This is another small establishment, and coupled with the high demand, you’ll want to make reservations to guarantee you get in, or at least try to get in!

The Golden Tiki – 3939 Spring Mountain Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89102

Another short hop from the Strip in the Chinatown Plaza, the Golden Tiki has a seafarer’s vibe all its own. The aesthetic is straight from the 1950s and 1960s romanticized misconceptions of Polynesian island life. True to form for the traditional tiki bar, The Golden Tiki specializes in rum-based tropical libations, Mai Tais, and various zombie cocktails.

As with some of the other entries on this list, space is at a premium, though they are open 24 hours a day. If you can’t get (suggested) reservations, feel free to try back at a less peak time. There are themed nights with matching server garb and specialized drink menus, so check out the website if you have something particular in mind. Even if you go on a non-theme night, the tiki lounge theme will impress. Great drinks and friendly staff await at The Golden Tiki.

Downtown Cocktail Room – 111 Las Vegas Blvd S

Billing itself as the “oldest continually operating bar in downtown Las Vegas,” the Downtown Cocktail Room, or DCR, has been going for 17 years. Sharing an alley with Las Vegas Blvd, it can be a little difficult to find. Once you do locate the secret door (ask someone coming in or leaving if you have trouble!), the inside is another of the “off the beaten path” kind of atmosphere.

Dim, flickering candles, low-volume music, and overall low-key energy make it a welcome change of pace from the frenetic pace of Las Vegas. While the expansive interior and upscale décor may give off a snobby attitude, you’ll find that DCR is the ultimate destination for fun-loving, everyday people. Chock full of low-brow NYC vibes, DCR has an eye-popping 63 seasonal menus featuring a list of hand-crafted originals and classic favorites.

The Barbershop Cuts & Cocktails – Cosmopolitan – Level 1, Boulevard Tower

As unique of an entry as you’ll find on any Las Vegas best-of list. The Barbershop Cuts & Cocktails is in fact a men’s grooming salon by day. It’s a different story at night, where you simply head through the janitor’s door to reveal a whiskey lounge. There’s no 1920s vibe or lack of energy here. Shabby chic décor, with luxurious leather couches lit by mismatched gaudy chandeliers, is the backdrop to your beverage experience.

Nightly bands provide the soundtrack, making it quite the meeting place. That having been said, reservations are definitely in order. Craft beer, speakeasy-style cocktails, and even bottle service is available. They also offer a food menu that is a step above typical bar fare (we LOVED the mini lobster tacos).

Mas Por Favor – 3879 Spring Mountain Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89102

What’s a traditional Mexican eatery doing on a speakeasy in Las Vegas list? Don’t be fooled, Mas Por Favor features a wonderful selection of fast-casual Mexican food. Regardless of if you are here to eat or drink, you can’t miss out on the old-world-style speakeasy in the back.

Margaritas of all shapes, sizes, and flavors are yours for the drinking. There are plenty of specialty cocktails, and we also had no trouble ordering off the drink menu. The nice thing about the “built-in” restaurant is being able to eat before or after drinks. Make sure to have reservations and be aware of their (typically) strictly enforced time limit.
